The Food Guide Pyramid

Smart eating is a part of growing healthy! But one size doesn’t fit all and that’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created “MyPyramid” —a plan to remind you to be physically active every day, or most days, and to make healthy food choices.

MyPyramid includes six food groups, with a suggested number of servings for each group. The color stripes in MyPyramid are different sizes that remind you to choose more foods from the food groups with the widest stripes. The wider stripes DO NOT mean these foods are more important or somehow better. It simply means you should eat more of that type of food each day.

The person climbing the stairs in MyPyramid is to remind you to do something active every day. Doing something active can be inline skating, swimming, dancing, or riding your bike—make your activity fun!

You can keep track of your food choices to see how they match up to the MyPyramid recommendations. The USDA has a worksheet that lets you write down your food choices and make a goal for tomorrow.

Remember, you don’t have to change everything overnight. Start with one, new good thing and add a new one every day!
