Be Kind to Animals Week!® is sponsored by the
American Humane Association to spread the message about kindness to animals and to draw attention to the wonderful work being done by the Nation's humane societies.
Here are some things you can do for animals:
- If your dog or cat doesn't have a collar with a current identification tag, this is a good week to get one!
Each year, 6.1 million pets are lost, and you don't want yours to be one of them. The tag should include your name, address, phone number (day and evening), the pet's name, and any special medical needs of your pet.
- Create a file with a written description of your pet that includes its size, markings, weight, and unusual features. Keep a current photo on file to use for posters or to take to the animal shelter if your pet gets lost.
- Microchip your pets and encourage others to do the same. Microchipping is a relatively new way of identifying pets, and it is a great idea. It is a permanent form of identification that gets implanted under the animal's skin, but don't worry; it is painless! Look here for other ways to
keep track of your pet.
- Volunteer your time at a local animal shelter. Here's a
list of animal shelters across the country.
- Give your pet a good wash and a groom. An extra treat won't hurt too!
- Don't have a pet of your own? Offer to walk or play with a neighbor's dog. They'll probably love the extra attention!
- Read about pet care in the library.
- Teach younger children how to be kind to animals, too!
- Tell a parent or a trusted adult if you think someone is abusing his or her pet.
This Animal Lover Has Girl Power!
In 2003, the American Humane Association recognized Haley Lavender and Peter Lubin for their kindness and compassion to animals. Read the amazing stories of Haley, Peter, and the runners-up by going to the
